20 Somethings

Happy Birthday to my little baby sister Carleigh. She turned 20 on Sunday. It seems like only yesterday that we were viciously beating each other on the drive to school, fighting over what radio station to listen to and stealing each other’s stuff….

Ohh wait… that may have been yesterday! I love you Carl!

P.S. You owe me $50!

Chocolate covered bacon?? Gross!

Part of my job is reading the newspaper every day. We have to know what’s going on in the area. So, I was doing just that when I stumbled across the most disgusting edible creation I think I have ever heard of: chocolate covered bacon.

I mean honestly, who would eat such a thing? And, if you managed to eat chocolate covered bacon -on a stick- if I forgot to mention that above, it is probably important that you find a hospital because a heart attack can't be far away.

I know you can get deep fried everything on a stick at the fair. Twinkies, Snickers bars and Oreos. But chocolate covered bacon crosses the line. I haven’t been to the Wisconsin State Fair (because nothing quite compares to the Bartholomew County Fair in my hometown -pineapple whip ice cream and a pork sandwich with Indiana tomatoes are amazing), but if I happen to check it out, I want to see who is standing in line for this treat.

Relationship defining decision: I will be a Cubs fan

Its official. I am a Cubs fan.

I have memorized all of the oddly pronounced last names of the players, I know who Lou Piniella is and I have my very own Cubbies t-shirt (thank you Joey).

Why Cubs and not Brewers? Because I happen to live with a Cubs enthusiast/fanatic/life long Cubs baseball hat wearer. And because cheering on the known rival and current #1 (Cubs are #2) team would make life difficult until baseball season is over.

Let me give a little background: I was once sent an e-mail with a woman in a wedding dress displaying her Cubs tattoo on her back with a note that said, “I think you should get one, babe.” I also received an e-mail from Joey about a little boy's father who made his wife promise that their first born son would be named Wrigley, to go along with their last names Fields. Not happening.

Anyway, Joey took me to my first ever Cubs game at Wrigley Field ( Cubs vs. Twins). We had an amazing time. It is a beautiful place with a lot of nostalgia. And the ambiance screams…Cubs for life!

After getting off the train at Wrigleyville, we went to a pizza place and got a slice of pizza. It was the biggest slice of pizza I have seen in my life. I put my hand in the picture to give a scale to go by, but it took both hands to pick it up and I couldn't eat it all. Joey did though!

The beautiful Wrigley Field. As Joey likes to quote "This is the most beautiful site these eyes have ever seen." (Thank you "Rudy"). He loves Wrigley Field and the Cubbies. Joey's Grandpa DesJean was probably recording the game, as he does all games. He keeps the games they win and watches them in the winter. Cubs love runs in the family.

Joey and I at the game! It was so much fun. The Cubs won in the bottom of the 9th inning (3-2).

Rosie and Riley

Over Memorial Day weekend, we had friends over for a BBQ and to sit by our fire pit. Rosie and Riley had their first experience eating corn on the cob and needless to say, they loved it!

Movin’ and Shakin’ (The before)

Over the past month, Joey and I have been setting up our new construction site apartment. It’s a really great house in historic Brewers Hill and it came with its own welcoming committee: spiders and a mouse that recently made a Tom and Jerry style hole in the pantry.

I’m happy to say the spiders have diminished dramatically but our little friend Stuart Little is probably still around. And, I can’t get a mouse trap because I would freak out of I killed the little guy. So, I have taken some advice from a co-worker who went to school at NYU. Since NYC is notorious for its dog sized rats, my bet is she knows what she is talking about. I am going to put peppermint oil on a cotton ball in his hole and hope he gets the hint and moves next door. I’ll let you know how that goes.

Below, you will find a picture of the front of our house. We have no porch, steps or entry to the front of our house but if all goes according to plan, construction should be done in the next month or so. Here is the before picture, I’ll post the after in a few weeks…hopefully!
